She says she loves the unfashionable way You think of melodies and words to say It'll come back around, for sure Look at how the kids love dinosaurs So keep singing like you're gonna be heard Keep writing like we read your words She's young, but she seems sincere And so it's worth another year Now gather round, family, and listen to my song I've been piecing it together since before you were young And I'm pushing on forever, only question is: Who's gonna pay for this? The welfare, the schoolyard, the bomb scares, the shit cards you're dealt (suck it up, get through it) The lost friends, the arcade, the frayed ends, never making the grade (suck it up, get through it) The long nights, the lost cause, the fistfights, all the fatal flaws (suck it up, get through it) The hare-brain, the poor health, and every last attempt to get rid of myself So sit yourself down, you'll be here awhile Nine more to go, all rank and file Burn me in love, drown me in fear Here's to the end of a dogshit year Could you please turn away from the mirror? Were you still getting younger? Are you planning on shaking up the game? I hope that you're plenty resilient Still making room for the millions And the twenty or so that were born on third base

I know when I'm slipping I feel when I fall Oh, and I never meant to be a tragic event To be such a cause for alarm And I promise you, mother I promise you, friends We are still gonna win and I will never give in 'Til I know that I've earned my amends But you know It's a crime where I come from And I'm still trying to shake it It's a crime where I come from To outlive what you can't outrun It's a crime where I come from To simply place yourself in the sun It's a crime where I come from I'm not a man of means Just the means to an end And I'll know the end when see it Until then, I believe and pretend And I know when I'm slipping I feel when I fall And believe me, I'll leave whatever I might receive If I just can't make it up to you all But you know It's a crime where I come from And I'm still trying to shake it It's a crime where I come from To forgive your mistakes and run It's a crime where I come from You can't just place yourself in the sun It's a crime where I come from You know, or you don't

Dear Donnie 04:21
Donnie, I don't want you darkening my doorstep Donnie, I don't wanna be a part of your new look Donnie, I don't want you talking to my children Donnie, I don't want you holding up my book Donnie, I didn't die bleeding in the desert So that a sick old man could frighten everyone No, it's not a matter of a bad interpretation Donnie boy, you know exactly what you've done So don't drag me into this Shake your tiny fist without my name I'm on the other side of this Where I've always been - I haven't changed Donnie, what I said is not a matter of opinion Donnie, if you read it then you might go blind Donnie, I'd be flipping every table in the temple Donnie, I am not and never have been on your side So don't drag me into this Like I'm good with this, like we were friends I'm on the other side of this Where I've always been, no matter how it ends Soon enough the walls are coming down Take it underground, and make it great There's a special place reserved for you Don't hesitate, don't be late Donnie, I don't want you darkening my doorstep Donnie, I don't want you thinking that you're saved Donnie, I don't wanna be quoted by a bad man Donnie, I don't want you pissing on my grave

Leave Me Low 04:09
Do you really want the explanation? Are you ready for the truth to show? Didn't the party take your invitation? Didn't the winner show you how to roll, or did they leave you low? So low When there's a target on your back, doesn't matter if you're bad or good And when you're taking the attack, doesn't matter if you think you should "Now I'm a target, another bad dream, another bad word kills another love scene You taught me not to fear, you can't scare me And so you leave me low" And I know that I should shut my mouth, I know that I should let it go But I kinda want to make it worse, I kinda want the world to know They never really bring you back, they never really bring you home You're in the belly of the airplane, miles above the world below If you could do it again Do the damage again Feed the fire again If you could do it again Would you leave me low? Become a target, another bad dream I swear this isn't all I know

I remember when we first met, before we knew it was such a mess One leaded, desperate harmony and I was the answer to everything Rolling in on a Sunset train, out of the ether into my veins To that place where hope eternal springs I was the answer to everything And I feel like I've been through this once before, but it's okay now So now I'm talking the trouble down, while you wind up and double down To that place where paranoia springs You've got an answer for everything And I'm on a long, long list - how do you find so many narcissists? But of all of the sociopaths you've kissed I was the answer to everything Even the doctor said to barricade the door, but it's okay now Hey now How did a late night call pin me against this wall? How do the things that drove you mad become the everything you have to have? Maybe you'll find some peace in that meditation In the heat of a Mexican beach on your next vacation Maybe you just need sleep and medication But please, you don't need me I remember when we first met, and now we get to get over it We'll get around to forgetting it You'll be all right, you're a pretty girl You'll pull another out of the world You'll get your way, you'll get that ring He'll be the answer to everything

She's a genius There's a reason the knife still twists when she calls There's a reason the sweetness is such an assault, yeah No calendar expiration on how the stomach turns when you hear a song She's a genius She's a leaver, she's cracking and you want her still Keep her locked in the back with your poems and pills No distance long enough to snap these strings No excuses, no falling apart when she sings She's a genius Maybe she's a genius, oh! The melody cuts deep, watch that bird take wing (leave it alone, can't you leave it alone?) You stay rooted, you stand silent, you can't do a thing (leave it alone, can't you leave it alone?) I could leave it alone, but it's genius She's a genius Maybe she's a genius There's a reason the knife still twists when she calls

(don't mind me and I won't mind you) So I've never been one to keep in touch I'm the one that waits for planets to align But give it time, it won't mean so much We're all becoming comfortably resigned And it's just like the day before But I'm not the odd one anymore (don't mind me and I won't mind you) And all the missionaries, salesmen too The doctors and the long lost friends and even you You can try your best through a dim-lit screen To tell me what I'm missing and what it really means But my cave is warm and sealed up tight You won't catch me on the Capitol steps putting up a fight They used to bother me, running around this city All dolled up pretty like they're going somewhere They don't no more, because they can't no more The anxieties are just memories, they don't bother me They can't no more, so shine on, shut in, shine on Shut in, shine on - these are the golden days (don't mind me and I won't mind you) I will not be home this summer I will not be home this fall I will not be home for the holidays I will not be home at all

Wakes on a Monday, staring at the wall Tired of, tired of it all Tidies up the bedroom for the seventh time It's comfortable, it's ritual, it's fine La la la la la la. This too shall fade. The road's familiar, she could drive it in her sleep Maybe she will Should be familiar to most anyone, believe until you break Then brake for the thrill And I feel it - we're stuck in this life I feel it - we're twisting the knife Wake every Monday, staring at the wall Tired of, tired of it all So I submit to your insistence on the path of least resistance I'll do everything I can to keep my face behind my hands This too shall fade

Seven billion hearts are beating Tapping out a tempo in a round Don't put the weight of years upon me In fifty we'll be ashes in the ground Distance and time are motherfuckers Distance and time will do us in But there are things that last forever Sewn into the wrinkles in our skin So I keep a watchful set of eyes for you Should you ever feel like showing I keep a chorus set aside for you Should you ever feel like singing Cuz I wanna play I want the playback Somehow respect became the silence And all the love became a weight We fled the scene of our surrender Packed up our pride before it got too late I'm burning up and you are frozen I'm sleeping in and you are tired But we stood steadfast with what was chosen Oh no, we never gave in to desire Still, I keep a watchful set of eyes for you Should you ever feel like showing I keep a chorus set aside for you Should you ever feel like singing Cuz I wanna play, uh oh I want the playback So it's easy to say we fought a good, clean fight I'll ship you my blankets for the cold, cold nights Be my Rosebud in the fire The broken bridge to Neverland I'll be your Ruxpin in the attic Playing back what slipped between your hands What slipped between your hands?

You had your chances, you had the answers down And your irresistible getaway castle with no way out She was a thing, she was an artifact for your collection It was almost complete, just one missing piece The world at your feet Still shy of perfection, but I'm the one who's singing her to sleep Without a fancy car or a wedding ring Or a fortune waiting in the wings I'm the one who's singing her to sleep And I've never been anywhere, never made this world mine You can slave away for the milllionaires, it won't make a man refined I work and I sleep, and drink on the cheap when I'm drinking But she's happy to be swimming in the same sea Between you and me, I don't know what she's thinking but I'm the one who's singing her to sleep Without a wild night on the streets of Rome Or a pleasure cruise, or a second home I'm the one who's singing her to sleep And I never learned how to play the game How to win the world, how to make a name And I fall apart like I'm seventeen And I'll never know what she sees in me But I'm the one who's singing her to sleep
